What we know

For years, the “Trolley Problem” has shown that humans are inconsistent (Foot, 1967; Thomson, 1985). We’ll flip a switch to kill one person to save five, but we refuse to push a man off a bridge to achieve the same result.

Researchers used fMRI to scan participants’ brains while they solved moral dilemmas involving fictitious victims (Majdandžić et al., 2012).

Experiment Design

Participants underwent “implicit priming” trials to manipulate perceived humanness:

  • Humanized Condition: Participants imagined the person’s personality or mental states (forcing “mentalizing”).

  • The Brain: Decisions involving humanized victims activated a network linked to negative emotions and behavioral control, including the pgACC/mOFC, anterior insula, and aMCC (Majdandžić et al., 2012).
  • The Circuitry: There was more functional connectivity between the aMCC and the anterior insula, as in these two regions were active together in time. This suggests the brain was working overtime to regulate the intense unpleasant feeling caused by imagining harm to a humanized person.

The Horizon

So What?

This explains why dehumanization, denying others uniquely human characteristics, is a precursor to harm in war and systemic prejudice (Haslam, 2006). It quiets the brain’s moral conflict circuit.

Reality Check

It’s important to keep in mind that the study used fictitious persons. As Majdandžić et al. (2012) note, real-world decisions involve complex social layers like “perceived oneness” or “altruistic motivation” that are challenging to replicate in a lab.

Future Directions

The findings suggest that “forced humanization” (perspective-taking) could be a powerful tool to increase prosocial behavior and decrease prejudice (Majdandžić et al., 2012).
